What is computer hacking?

When people think about computer hacking, they often imagine it the way that they see it in the movies. A computer hacker is someone with an incredible amount of knowledge about computer systems and networks, and they may use advanced software to write code and override security measures. People imagine that this is something you would need years of training and experience to do.

But in reality, computer hacking just means gaining unauthorized access. That could mean access to a device like a phone or a tablet. It could also mean access to an entire computer system or a network. But it is not always a highly technical process.

An example of white collar crime

Computer hacking can be a component of a white collar crime. It could be carried out by someone who is not necessarily all that tech-savvy.

For example, say that a worker for an international corporation decides that they are going to steal financial assets or trade secrets. They are not allowed to access those networks or bank accounts. But they manage to get the passwords from a third party, they gain unauthorized access to the system, and they use that access for personal gain.

This individual may have no idea how to override security measures or write computer code. They simply input the password that they have taken without permission. This is still computer hacking because they have gained unauthorized access to that system.

Legal defense options

It is important to understand how things like this are defined when facing white collar crime accusations. Those who are facing such charges must be well aware of their criminal defense options moving forward.
